FREE PATTERN – Call the Veterinarian Crochet Blanket

3762 Views 11 Comments

The original Call the Midwife blanket is one of my favourite crochet blanket patterns. I made one a year ago for my expectant friend and it was a huge hit! I love the filet crochet and I was itching to adapt this for my own baby- my fur baby, Lucie. So the Call the Veterinarian Crochet Blanket was born…

You will need:

  • 5mm crochet hook (I use a KnitPro Waves hook which you can get here)
  • Any Aran / Worsted Weight yarn. I used Paintbox Simply Aran (239) Sailor Blue. Approximately 400g will make you blanket 7 repeats tall. (800-1000 yards)
  • Yarn Needle for those pesky ends! (These with big loops for eyes are my favourite add-on EVER!)

Notes
This pattern is written in UK terms.
Beginning Ch at start of each row doesn’t count as a stitch.
You can easily increase or decrease the size by adding to your starting Ch; just make sure you start with a multiple of 16 + 6.
Because of the design, which is created by the use of skipped stitches, you’ll be crocheting into those stitches often. It’s up to you whether you crochet into the Ch, or the space created by it. I chose to crochet into the Ch itself because I felt it made my rows look a little less wonky.
Each of those skipped stitches still counts as a stitch for the row that follows it. So if it tells you to “TC in next 6 sts”, and there are only 4 TCs from the previous row followed by a space that was created by chains, you’ll need to put the last 2 TC into those chains (or the ch-sp if you prefer).
If you would like to make this blanket using DK yarn then go down to a 4mm hook.

Shouldn’t you repeat row 2 also? Instead of repeating rows 3-7, shouldn’t it say repeat rows 2-7?

    • Aly

Yes! You are completely right. Changing it now. Thank you so much for pointing out the mistake!

I’ve started this blanket several times this morning and still continue to come out uneven. Should there be more in the chain?

    • Aly

      Hi Deb!
Are you making sure that when you do your Ch4 at the start of the row that when the pattern tells you to Skip 2sts that you’re including the one the chain is next to? Remember the chain 4 doesn’t count as a stitch
      Hope this helps
