From Florida to Georgia, and now Oregon: my knitwear journey is a colourful tale of learning. Sometimes, it’s about finding the right yarn, not just the colours 🌈 🧶

This is the Sheer V Sweater by @jessssiemae - and you’ll realise the “sheer” isn’t really sheer…
•
That’s because I fell in love with two yarns- the first being @beachbunnyyarns in a shade called “My Happy Place” that I purchased at @suncoastyarns while on my galivants around Florida.
•
Worried that the beautiful yellow tones of the yarn would wash me out (albeit gorgeous, those shades were NOT hitting my colour wheel recommendations) I decided to pair the yarn with a lovely Suri Silk fluff from @republica_unicornia_yarns in Georgia. This is where the mishap happened, as I was drawn more to colours than to the designers yarn recommendations which would have left me with more sheerness in the front, rather than a distinctive pink V 🩷
•
Now don’t get me wrong, I ADORE my colour choices and LOVE this sweater, but I’m still doubting the V. Maybe it’s because *i know* I made a faux pas, or maybe it’s because I don’t think it stands out too much either. I’ve been toying with the idea of duplicate stitching over the V just to make it one single coloured sweater, but I can’t decide 🤔

This sweater is getting a lot of wear either way! But what do you think? Duplicate over or keep it as is? Let me know below! 🩷

Find yourself friends who make you feel like you’re at home on the other side of the world (literally!) - thank you to this wonderful badass woman who lent me her car, gave me her bed, took me for doughnuts, drove me for a 6am coffee, woke up at 5:15 to get me to the airport, drove me across my 48th state line, took me to the beach, supervised me hiking and NOT ONCE did she do any of it begrudgingly, and she ALWAYS had a smile on her face. ❤️

If you don’t know or follow Kate, she is a talented photographer and a superstar traveller and her insta is FULL of inspiration. She’s an inspirational human, PERIOD. I am so lucky to know her and have her in my life. ❤️

Had a wonderful day visiting the @atlbotanical yesterday- my hair deflated almost immediately on contact with the Atlanta air and what you see is basically as good as it gets! 💁🏻‍♀️

I’m still committed to that pattern-of-three across the grid and this sweater has had some SERIOUS wear lately. It’s probably in my top 3 knits! It’s the #RaoulSweater by @kolibri.by_johanna that I knit exclusively in @hobbii_yarn Friends Kid Silk & Extra Fine Merino (both in shade “Olive”) 💚

Swipe to see my Atlanta Sister from another Mister @republica_unicornia_yarns and I rocking our hand knits from yesterdays trip and also from last years trip. She’s immediately going to notice she’s wearing the same HANDMADE blouse (so I’m going to point it out anyway) but the photo from last year is distinctly lacking in knitwear (thank you, Atlanta!) but we more than made up for it this year!!!

I picked a reindeer literally just like me: kept stopping for snacks, didn’t want to go for a walk- and then when I got him moving, he took off and I almost ended up being dragged through the snow ❄️ I’m sure he’s a stubborn Taurus like me 😂

I am a spiteful potato. 🥔 This is my new mantra.

The psychologist Carl Rogers did some analogising around potatoes and pointed out that even though conditions were unfavourable for growing potatoes in the dark and they lacked the environment they needed meaning they could never reach their full potential, they still had a natural drive to try as hard as they could to grow. 🌱
•
I am a spiteful potato, because although conditions have been unfavourable, and I might be a little spindly- I have grown. I have had an incredible life- from what I thought, was out of spite- because if you told me I couldn’t, I would.
•
In 2013 I sent my parents an FYI email telling them that I had rented a car and was going to drive from New York to Nashville and start exploring the world. What this email resulted in was a rebuttal essay exploring my “stupidity” at wanting to do this and how I should “cancel everything and get the money back”. My parents tried to crush my spirit and crush my dreams.
•
Well dear reader, out of (what I call) “spite”, I went on that road trip. And then another, and another, and have been to 46 out of 50 US states all before turning 30. I have also been to 54 countries of the world.
•
How different would my life be if I hadn’t have been the spiteful potato?
•
My wonderful therapist shared this tidbit with me: it’s not spite that fuelled me, but my learning that only *I* can set my limits and nobody else.
•
So here’s some yarn- yarn I got in person in Florida and in Georgia. Only six skeins in my international collection. If I had not taken that first road trip, I would not have been who I am today (and I wouldn’t have this yarn) It’s one of the most defining moments of my life.
•
So why share this with you?
•
Because *you will* be knocked down at times in your life, because *you will* be told “no” or “you can’t”.
•
But you CAN. *BE* the spiteful potato. We might have had a tough road, but we still can make good potato chips and have those great experiences.
•

Last year, our yarny community lost a shining star in Liv of @the_wool_shed - I’m posting these photos of Liv and the following words with permission from her mum Sophie who has done some stellar work keeping Liv’s store, passion and memory alive. ❤️

In 2021, Liv and myself released a pattern called The Cascade Slouchy: designed by myself, and yarn was provided by Liv. She’s wearing it in these photos 📷

Last time I posted it was 2023 and I was sat on a beach in Jamaica and I had just casted on my Raoul Sweater by @kolibri.by_johanna and I’ve had so much since then exploring the islands of the Caribbean that not a lot else got done. I almost posted a photo of just the hem because that’s how far I’d gotten in 3 weeks… it was just *too* hot to be knitting and I was having too much fun with my new friends (love you @215rain ❤️)

Since I got back on Monday (and what an adventure that was in itself 🤦🏻‍♀️) I’ve absolutely PLOUGHED through the back side of the sweater and I’ve just cast on for the front. My holiday laundry can wait…
•
Not going to lie though, I have a little bit of WIP anxiety, as for the first time since I started knitting, I have too many WIPs for my liking. These are:
