I don’t think I’ve ever really liked anything thicker than a DK weight yarn, and yet there’s something about the Paintbox Simply Aran range that I can’t get enough of…
When I went to start my Mandala Madness (pattern by Helen Shrimpton) I knew there was one clear choice for my yarn. Paintbox Simply Aran comes in over 60 different colours and with so many colour palettes whizzing around my head, I knew this line of yarn would cover my every need.

Eventually I settled on my pastel colour palette and I’ve been in awe watching the beauty infront of me unravel (pun definitely intended!)
Making a blanket, in the back of my mind I knew it had to be durable, and with the amount of effort going into the cacophony of stitches- this blanket better be in it for the long haul! So obviously I needed my yarn to keep up.
I’ve always been a bit shy toward acrylic. Don’t get me wrong, I use a lot of it, but I know after 1 or 2 washes it starts to get fuzzy and loses its definition. After hooking up my Call the Veterinarian blanket and throwing that in the wash, complete with all the cat hair, I knew that the Simply Aran would stand the test of time.
Also, can we talk about the fact that its okay to tumble dry this yarn? Granted, only lightly, and acrylic doesn’t need a lot of time to dry, but when you’re in a hurry throwing things in and out of your washer dryer, at least you don’t have to worry that your precious piece of crochet art will die a fiery death inside your tumble dryer and come out horrible misshapen and shrunken when you accidentally throw it in. That’s definitely one load off my mind!
Its also cool to cool iron your finished pieces. So if you’re looking to quick block a project, this is one yarn that’s absolutely okay with an (cool) iron being cast over it. No more pins and blocking boards- huzzah!
In the 20+ balls of this that I’ve used so far, I haven’t found A SINGLE KNOT. Can we just appreciate this last sentence. NO. KNOTS. Its such a rarity to come across such neatly plied yarn now and finding (or more accurately not finding) knots is something that can make or break your yarn experience. People have switched brands over much less. Its great to find consistency in a product and this is something Paintbox Simply Aran is brimming with.
Now I know what you must be thinking: “Oh Aly you’ve describe this amazing yarn as just that: amazing. So it must be super expensive”. Oh dear reader, how much further from the truth could you be? Paintbox Simply Aran retails from anywhere between £2 – £3 per 100g ball. What sound does a baby chick make? Cheap.
So not only will you have a great quality yarn, but it won’t break the bank. What are you doing still reading this article? Click here to purchase yourself some yarny goodness.
