I’ve struggled lately to put into words how weird and strange the world surrounding us is right now. I’m now crocheting full time instead of working, and we’re eating food religiously out of the freezer instead of just “popping” to the shops.

Supermarkets will survive. But the small independent stores will struggle. If I’m not working, I have no money, therefore I cannot spend it and poof, so dies someone’s small business dream.

Unfortunately that’s true of too much of the population right now.

However, If you do have the pennies to spare, may I encourage you all to invest in the smaller businesses? Even if you can’t get to your post right now, most of these businesses are willing to honour gift cards so that you can choose a beautiful handmade item when all this madness has blown over.

A small business is a single mother trying to make ends meet for her children and our food on their plates.

A small business is a disabled man who physically cannot cope with the rigid 9-5 of the corporate world so chose to do it alone.

A small business is someone waking up with the motivation to chase their dream.

There are so many small businesses out there that need us now, more than ever. So I’ve picked out a few of my favourites that you should definitely take a look at in your search.

#1 – Vicki Brown Designs

If I could only say one word about Vicki it would be “socks”. She is the absolute QUEEN of crochet socks and the yarn to go with them! You can get a copy of her sock patterns and a whole selection of deeply delectable colourful yarns in her Etsy shop here.

Miriam is usually known for her beautifully woven pieces (as photographed above) but has recently started channeling her innner sparkle into resin needle minders and stitch markers and the results are amazing! Find her Etsy shop here.

#3 – Truly Hooked

Verity is a yarn-dying extraordinaire – but when she’s not doing that, she’s also a whizz with the knitting needles and crochet hooks and has self-published her own patterns. They’re so gorgeous, I wish I could knit faster. Find them in her Etsy shop here.
